The Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Chancel Choir faithfully provided the musical foundation for choral worship at Sargent for many years. Its ministry embraced beloved hymns, anthems, and especially the rich preservation of Negro spirituals and works by African American composers. A cherished tradition of the choir was the early morning Carols and Confirmation celebration at 6:00 AM every Christmas Day.
Beyond Sunday worship, the choir represented Sargent at annual community and ecumenical gatherings, including Dr. King birthday commemorations, Black History Month observances, and regional choir festivals at National Presbyterian Church and other African American Presbyterian congregations throughout the DMV.
The choir was accompanied by Dr. Luvenia George and directed over the years by Salone Clary, followed by Steven Gibson, and most recently Patricia Braswell. While the Chancel Choir is currently inactive, we remain prayerful and hopeful for its reactivation as the Spirit leads and as God raises voices to sing again.
