Sargent Chancel Choir

The Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Chancel Choir, provided the musical foundation for choral worship every Sunday for many years. Its ministry included favorite hymns, anthems, and especially the preservation of Negro spirituals and other works by African American composers. A notable custom was the celebration of Carols and Confirmation, which was rendered during 6 AM every Christmas morning. The choir also represented Sargent at annual choir commemorations during Dr. King’s birthday recognitions, Black History Month, and at the choir festivals at National Presbyterian Church and at other Black Presbyterian churches in the DMV. Accompanied by Dr. Luvenia George, the Choir was directed by Salone Clary, followed by Steven Gibson, and most recently, Patricia Braswell.
