The Sargent "Wings" Chamber Orchestra began its journey in 2002 as the Walker Trio, a passionate group of string siblings with a shared love for classical music. What started as a small gathering of musicians quickly blossomed into a vibrant ensemble as friends and fellow musicians joined in the fun.
Recognizing the potential of this growing group, the late Rev. Dr. John Gravely, the interim pastor at the time, and late Ms. Mary Jean Golladay, the director of the children’s choir at the time, advocated for the creation of a legitimate youth orchestra at Sargent. Under their vision and the guidance of Ms. Golladay, the ensemble officially became the Sargent "Strings" Orchestra.
As the ensemble evolved, young wind musicians began to join, enriching the orchestra's sound. With this growth, conductor and educator Ms. Élise Sharp, then Cuffy, stepped in as the official director of the ensemble. In response to this growth, the ensemble rebranded itself as the "Wings" Orchestra, symbolizing their soaring musical aspirations.
Today, the Wings Chamber Orchestra is a substantial ensemble that regularly performs in services, seamlessly blending classical pieces with traditional hymns, gospel music, and contemporary works. The group has become an integral part of Sargent’s musical landscape, often accompanying and enhancing the choir's performances.
The orchestra remains open to amateur musicians, fostering a welcoming environment for those eager to share their passion for music. Co-Directors Josalyn Walker, an original string musician, and Aaron Logan, an original wind musician, now lead the ensemble, guiding a new generation of musicians while honoring the group's rich history.
