Research Summary:
This study explored the relationship between an urban college and its surrounding community through the lens of a sustainability initiative; the transformation of a football field into an organic farm. Using a qualitative phenomenological case study approach, the research captured the lived experiences of college-affiliated and community stakeholders. Findings revealed that the farm enhanced campus and community engagement, improved access to health and wellness resources, and contributed to a shift in institutional identity. However, challenges related to trust and long-term accessibility remained. Grounded in Sustainable Development Theory, this study highlights the potential of sustainability initiatives to foster equitable, reciprocal partnerships between higher education institutions and their communities.
